About Mary

Mary Hickey

Who are you?

Mary's experimentation with art began at an early age. Over the years she has been involved in various crafts but her passion lies in painting.

Coming from an artistic background, and she devotes much of her time and passion to her talent. With a love of drawing and painting she has developed her own style and technique. She is mainly self taught.

What do you do?

Mary works mainly with oils-very much drawn to the subtle use of light and shadow in her paintings. She tries to convey emotions of peace and tranquility.

She hopes to make people just pause for a moment, and enjoy the colour and texture of the paintings, with balance variety and movement.

How does creation of art make you feel?

Totally focused oblivious of all, relaxed.

Producing work varying from graphite sketches and oils to vibrant acrylic multimedia pieces she draws her inspiration from the everyday environment. She has been commissioned to complete several graphite portraits which were received with much acclaim.

Time spent creating each piece

I love planning a new piece, thinking about it from different aspects, even dreaming about it and finally working at it. This whole process can take weeks/months, and the final result is a mixture of all the planning and execution:

Artists who have influenced you?

Johannes Vermeer, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Donaghy

What inspires you?

I see beauty and inspiration in the everyday environment, and the people around me, from farmyard animals to majestic seascapes, from hurlers in action to the Irish landscape, I love the colour of the seasons-flowers and fauna.

I think my use of colours is a reflection of my usually optimistic nature.

When did you start painting?

Searching for new methods and new media she has attended respected courses- Abstract art course at the Burren College; art course at Kilkenny Vocational School; life drawing classes with Helen Comerford in Kells Co. Kilkenny.

How are you accomplishing what you claim to do?

She is currently studying art online. Her work can be found in many Irish locations, including Kilkenny Golf Club, St. Luke's General Hospital, and as far afield as Singapore, USA and Australia.

Mary is a member of the Kilkenny Photographic Society.
